Even though the Mentawais is known for experienced surfers we happen to have a few breaks in the nearby area that are suitable for beginner surf lessons, intermediate surfers as well. All levels are welcome!

In the nearby area of our surf camp within 1 – 2 km you will find around 9 Surf Spots with the most known and famous wave Telescopes right around our corner.

Q: CAN ALL LEVELS SURF IN THE MENTAWAIS YEAR ROUND?

A: Yes.

All surfing levels can surf in the Mentawais year round. The key is understanding that conditions, swell size, and spot selection change throughout the year.

The Mentawais are not only about giant barrels and advanced reef breaks. There are also many playful waves, protected areas, and beginner/intermediate-friendly surf spots, especially around North Sipora.

Even during the main swell season, there are often more manageable surf options available depending on the forecast and conditions.

Our surf coaching setup is specifically designed to adapt daily based on:

Q: WHEN IS THE BEST TIME FOR BEGINNERS?

A: Beginners and low-intermediate surfers (L1-L2) can absolutely enjoy the Mentawais throughout the year.

That said, smaller swell periods and shoulder months can sometimes offer even more comfortable and playful conditions for progression surfing.

Our surf coaching programs are designed specifically to help beginners progress safely and confidently in tropical surf conditions.

Depending on the forecast and conditions, we adapt locations and schedules daily to find the best available beginner surf.

Q: WHEN IS THE BEST TIME FOR INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED SURFERS?

A: The main Mentawai swell season generally runs from mid-April until mid-October.

During this period, powerful Indian Ocean swells consistently hit the island chain and create the world-class surf conditions the Mentawais are famous for.

Peak consistency usually occurs between May and September.

That said, not every L4 surfer is chasing double overhead barrels every day. Many advanced surfers also simply enjoy long clean walls, high-performance waves, playful reef breaks, or less crowded sessions with quality surf.

Because of the wide variety of waves in the Mentawais, advanced surfers can often still find incredible surf outside of the traditional “peak” conditions as well.

This period is generally best for:
• L3 Intermediate Surfers
• L4 Advanced Surfers
• More consistent Indian Ocean swells
• Advanced surf coaching and guiding
• Long reef breaks and high-performance surf
• Bigger and more powerful conditions on certain swells

Q: WHAT ABOUT FEBRUARY & MARCH?

A: February and March can actually be beautiful months in the Mentawais and are often underestimated.

While the northern wind season between November and January can sometimes bring more unstable weather patterns, February and March often start transitioning back into cleaner and more balanced conditions.

During these months:
• Crowds are significantly lower
• Conditions can become more playful and manageable
• Beautiful glassy mornings still occur regularly
• Early Indian Ocean swells can already start appearing
• The atmosphere is quieter and more relaxed

When proper swell lines arrive during this period, the Mentawais can still deliver incredible surf with far fewer people in the water.

For many surfers, these months offer a hidden sweet spot between quality surf and a more peaceful island experience.

Q: WHAT ABOUT SHOULDER SEASON SURF?

A: Shoulder season periods can offer an incredible balance between fun surf, cleaner conditions, and fewer crowds.

During these months:
• Surf is often more manageable
• There can still be excellent swell activity
• Crowds are usually lower
• Conditions can become more suitable for progression surfers

For many guests, these periods offer the perfect combination between high-quality surf and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Q: CAN FLAT SPELLS OR BAD WEATHER HAPPEN?

A: Yes — like every surf destination in the world, the Mentawais remain fully dependent on nature and ocean conditions.

Flat spells, storm systems, changing swell directions, strong winds, rain, or difficult tides can occur during any season. Likewise, epic conditions can also appear unexpectedly outside the traditional “best season.”

Surf forecasting has improved massively over the years, but nobody controls the ocean. That unpredictability is simply part of surfing and traveling to remote natural destinations.

Q: WHAT ABOUT CROWDS?

A: The Mentawais are world famous, and certain well-known waves can become crowded during peak swell periods.

However, our location around North Sipora offers access to a large variety of surf spots within relatively short distances, allowing us to adapt daily depending on conditions, crowd levels, and surfing levels.

For that reason, many surfers prefer the shoulder months as well, where excellent surf can still occur with a more relaxed atmosphere in the water.

Q: WHAT SEASON SHOULD I CHOOSE?

A: In general:

• Mid-April → Mid-October
Main swell season with the highest consistency and world-class conditions.

• February → March
Beautiful transition months with lower crowds, fun conditions, and the possibility of excellent early-season swells.

• November → January
More variable weather patterns due to northern winds, but still capable of producing quality surf depending on conditions.

• All Surf Levels
Can absolutely surf in the Mentawais year round, as we adapt locations and surf spots daily depending on the conditions and guest levels.

No matter the season, the Mentawai Islands remain one of the most iconic surf destinations in the world and offer an unforgettable combination of tropical island life, world-class waves, nature, and surf progression.

We prioritize offering an exclusive experience for our in-house guests at Solid Surf Mentawai.

As a general rule, external guests are not allowed on our surf boat trips.

Exceptions may be made in rare cases, such as for previous guests staying nearby or if there’s extra space or a combination of the two.

This is evaluated day by day and depends entirely on availability. We do not take those type of bookings in advance.

Surfboard rental is not available to external guests, unless it is booked in combination with a surf boat trip and is subject to the T&C`s we previously mentioned.

• Surf boat trip (2 sessions): €85 per person per day

• Surfboard rental (only with boat trip): €15 per day

• Boards must remain on the premises and cannot be taken offsite.

No need to keep a large budget for food as we will provide 7 days a week full board meals. Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks & Dinner is included in our Mentawai package, as the local options are scarce. Local food is available at a much lower cost than European-style cuisine but the choice is very very limited. If you like to have a taste of what the island cuisine is like it will be mostly based on Padang food or streetfood (which is definitely worth the try). There are literally a few small local Warungs (restaurants) that serve fried chicken (Ayam Lalapan), Nasi Padang, Rendang and few other options. You can also find a Chinese warung on a 15 min drive along the main road or can go on a 5 min walk down the beach and visit the only western food, Pizza and Burgers, place on the island “The Bakery”. Ofcourse you can also buy your own snacks and food in the supply stores that you can find in town such as crisps, coke, water, chocolate, icecream etc. We feel it is good to go out sometimes, meet the friendly locals and see what is out there while supporting the local economy at the same time.

No mandatory vaccine requirements are nescessary to enter Indonesia and the Mentawais.

Travel and cancellation insurance are essential and obligated for any traveler that books with Solid Surf House, as unforeseen circumstances can arise during any trip. Such circumstances can include accidents, medical emergencies, loss of baggage or passports, and trip cancellations or ferry & flight interruptions & cancellations. Without insurance, travelers may find themselves facing significant financial losses. In case of booking costs, Solid Surf House is not obligated to compensate in any of these events.

Travel & Cancellation insurances provides coverage for such unforeseen events, ensuring that travelers are protected against financial losses that may arise due to these events. Cancellation insurance, in particular, provides coverage for the expenses incurred when a trip is canceled or interrupted due to unforeseen circumstances.

Thus, having travel and cancellation insurance is crucial for travelers as it offers peace of mind and financial protection during their journeys. This remains at the responsibility of the traveller and Solid Surf House guest.

We are the fastest to reach location in the Mentawais. Mentawais is a group of three islands in front of the Indonesia province Sumatra. 

One of the three Mentawai Islands is Sipora Island, which where we are located a 10 min drive from the terminal port and capital of the Mentawai, village called Tua Pejat.

It is not very complicated to get here as it is it is three steps only.

To simplify your journey to the Mentawai we will give you a easy break down first, before getting into more details and schedules.

We will start with the first city of arrival in Indonesia: PADANG.

Padang you can reach from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Jakarta

HOW TO GET HERE

Fly to and arrive in Padang —> to the hotel in Padang. Spend one night there to catch the Fast Ferry or Flight early in the next morning. There is no option to travel the same day to the Mentawai Islands. A night in Padang is therefore required.

Once arrived in the Mentawai (Sipora Island, Tua Pejat) we will pick you up from the terminal harbour or Rokot Airport and bring you to our surf house, which is nearby.

Your total trip will look like this:

1. Arrival Padang City (Sumatera) —> Hotel in Padang. There is no same day transfer to Mentawai possible, a night stay is therefore required. Arrive the day before the fast ferry or flight goes to Mentawai.

2. Early next morning (fast ferry or flight) —> Tua Pejat ( Fast Ferry or Flight is on Wednesday & Saturday )

3. Arrival Tua Pejat —> Solid Surf House (Sipora Island / Mentawais)

We can arrange the full pick up and drop off from airport –> hotel –> fast ferry / airport, flight.

Arrival Information

Your journey starts with a flight to Minangkabau International Airport (PDG) in Padang, West Sumatra. From Padang, you can travel to the Mentawai Islands by Fast Ferry or Susi Air flight.

You must arrive in Padang at least one day before departure to Mentawai.
Same-day travel is not possible due to early ferry/flight departure times.

Likewise, on your return, a same-day outbound flight from Padang is only possible when flying with Susi Air from Mentawai on a Tuesday or Saturday.
For all other routes, you must spend one night in Padang.

We recommend booking your Padang hotel independently. Hotel Mercure, Santika and Hotel Ibis are reliable options close to the ferry terminal.
