The Surf Instructor Course program offers the most comprehensive surf program in the world with its ISA & ILS Level 2 courses, which are officially endorsed by the International Surf Association and the Indonesian Surf Federation.
We offer course-only options, as well as a 1-week stay that includes the ISA course, and a complete program that lasts 4 weeks.
During your 4-week stay, we aim to prepare you for the ISA & ILS Level 2 course that is linked to the program. We provide tuition manuals, intern hours, and life-saving exercises to give you a head start on the actual course.
Our qualified ISA & ILS surf instructors and their assistants will coach you twice a day to help you pass your 5-day ISA & ILS Level 2 course. The course includes lessons, training, analysing, and the final examination. While the course normally takes place in just two days, we offer a minimum of 5 days for our program.
During your stay with us, you can expect to be surfing six times a week on average, with two sessions per day. Sundays are designated rest days, but you’re free to surf or explore as you wish.
We’re committed to helping you become a well-rounded surfer and instructor, so we’ll be taking advantage of Mentawais world-renowned waves. We’ll go on trips to the legendary Mentawai Natives, Waterfalls and Snorkelling tours. As well as surfing the famous and infamous breaks right here in the Mentawai.
We believe in using video analysis as a tool for personal development, so we’ll be filming and photographing your surfing sessions regularly. Once a week, we’ll sit down together for video analysis, where you’ll not only evaluate your own progress but also learn from watching others. To ensure a comprehensive understanding of surfing, we’ve dedicated time for theory evenings where we delve into topics such as safety and surfing rules. Additionally, we also offer surf skate sessions and freedive/surf apnea workshops and training to enhance your knowledge and skills in the sport. Our goal is to provide a very complete surfing experience that goes beyond just riding waves.
But it’s not all work and no play! We believe in letting loose and enjoying ourselves, so we’ve got a fully stocked bar where you can unwind with a drink or cocktail. Our in-house chefs serve up many specialties and world classics made according to original recipes, so you can refuel with delicious food after a long day of surfing.

Snorkel gear – We have plenty of complete sets of snorkel gear to swim around in our private reef in front of the Villa. It is free to use it. We also organise trips to snorkel sights a bit more remote at an additional fee. See more about this further down this page.
Water scooters – we have 5 water scooters that can be used for swimming and snorkelling. The scooters are free to use and on the paid excursions it is free option to include. See more about this further down this page.

Our ISA Surf Instructor Academy in the Mentawai is designed for surfers aiming to obtain their ISA Level 1 or Level 2 instructor certification. Due to the more challenging conditions in the Mentawai, a minimum surf level of 3 is required to participate. Unlike a surf coaching retreat, where the focus is on personal surfing progression, this academy is primarily about qualifying as a surf instructor. The program ensures that your surf skills meet the required standards while equipping you with the necessary teaching techniques and knowledge to become a certified ISA instructor.

Even though the Mentawais is known for experienced surfers we happen to have a few breaks in the nearby area that are suitable for beginner surf lessons, intermediate surfers as well. All levels are welcome!

Q: What about intermediate and advanced surfers? Do you have something for us?
A: Absolutely! We understand the needs of intermediate and advanced surfers, and we’re proud to offer tailored experiences for L3 intermediate and L4 advanced surfers. Our boat surf guiding sessions are designed to take you on an adventure across the Mentawais up to Playgrounds in the north to the South near Hollow Trees challenging yourself in more advanced conditions. In the nearby area of our surf camp within 1 – 2 km you will find around 9 Surf Spots with the most known and famous wave Telescopes right around our corner.
We have separate surf guiding sessions dedicated to these skill levels to ensure you have the best experience possible.

No need to keep a large budget for food as we will provide 7 days a week full board meals. Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks & Dinner is included in our Mentawai package, as the local options are scarce. Local food is available at a much lower cost than European-style cuisine but the choice is very very limited. If you like to have a taste of what the island cuisine is like it will be mostly based on Padang food or streetfood (which is definitely worth the try). There are literally a few small local Warungs (restaurants) that serve fried chicken (Ayam Lalapan), Nasi Padang, Rendang and few other options. You can also find a Chinese warung on a 15 min drive along the main road or can go on a 5 min walk down the beach and visit the only western food, Pizza and Burgers, place on the island “The Bakery”. Ofcourse you can also buy your own snacks and food in the supply stores that you can find in town such as crisps, coke, water, chocolate, icecream etc. We feel it is good to go out sometimes, meet the friendly locals and see what is out there while supporting the local economy at the same time.
Mentawai offers excellent surf conditions year-round. Even during the offseason, the quality of the surf surpasses that of many high-season destinations. Indonesia, in general, boasts consistently excellent surf, attracting surfers and professionals throughout the year. The main surfing season, from May to September, is renowned for its bigger and more consistent swells. However, these swells can sometimes be too large for the average surfer and activating big wave spots that the PRO surfers are looking for. Nonetheless, there is still plenty of surf spots available during the high season even with big swells, ensuring fun for surfers of all levels including beginners.
For most surfers, the shoulder season (October/November – March/April) and even the off-season (December, january, February) are suitable choices.
During these periods, the surf remains superb and is particularly suitable for beginner to intermediate/advanced surfers. While there may be fewer big swells, the waves are still fun and accessible.
The rain season, unlike some other regions like Bali or Sri Lanka, Mentawai does not experience a distinct rainy season or monsoon. Rain is spread throughout the year, with a slight increase during the off-season but still plenty of sunny days to boast your vitamin D.
In conclusion, there is never a bad time to visit Indonesia for surfing. Whether it’s the peak season or the quieter shoulder/off-season, Mentawai offers consistent waves and enjoyable surfing experiences for all skill levels.
No mandatory vaccine requirements are nescessary to enter Indonesia and the Mentawais.
Travel and cancellation insurance are essential and obligated for any traveler that books with Solid Surf House, as unforeseen circumstances can arise during any trip. Such circumstances can include accidents, medical emergencies, loss of baggage or passports, and trip cancellations or flight interruptions & cancellations. Without insurance, travelers may find themselves facing significant financial losses. In case of booking costs, Solid Surf House is not obligated to compensate in any of these events.
Travel & Cancellation insurances provides coverage for such unforeseen events, ensuring that travelers are protected against financial losses that may arise due to these events. Cancellation insurance, in particular, provides coverage for the expenses incurred when a trip is canceled or interrupted due to unforeseen circumstances.
Thus, having travel and cancellation insurance is crucial for travelers as it offers peace of mind and financial protection during their journeys. This remains at the responsibility of the traveller and Solid Surf House guest.
We are located in the Mentawai a group of three islands in front of the Indonesia province Sumatera. One of the three Mentawai Islands is Sipora Island which where we are located near the port and capital of the Mentawai, Tua Pejat.
To get here requires a little more organisation than to fly into Bali, and so we look at this location as a destination on its own.
With that being said it is not very complicated to get here as it is it is three steps only.
To simplify your journey to the Mentawai we will give you a easy break down first, before getting into more details and schedules.
We will start with the first city of arrival:
- Jakarta (Indonesia) or Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). As this is the hub how to get to Pandang and then later to the Mentawai.
- Arrival Padang -> to the hotel in Padang. Spend one night there to catch the Fast Ferry early in the morning.
- Once arrived in Sipora Island (Mentawai) Tua Pejat we will pick you up from the harbour and bring you to our surf house, which is nearby.
Your total trip will look like this:

Jakarta / Kuala Lumpur (KL): Jakarta/ Kuala Lumpur is the main hub to reach Padang. Internationally or domestic this is the transit airport to get to Padang. From Jakarta / Kuala Lumpur you can take any possible flight to Pandag City in Sumatera. This is a 2.5 Hr flight and can easily be booked for very fair prices. Fly from Jakarta with Garuda, Citylink, Batik Air or Lion Air or from Kuala Lumpur with Air Asia.
Padang City: In Padang City you will need to spend one night here so you can take the fast ferry in the early morning. As the flights will not match the departure time of the Fast Ferry. The best days to fly into Padang are: Sunday – Tuesday – Thursday – Saturday because the fast ferry will depart the next morning early.

Flying Padang –> Tua Pejat / Sipora Island (Mentawai)
For those who want to fly from Padang –> Sipora Island (Mentawai) there is now a Tuesday and Friday flight available with Susi Air – No surf boards allowed!
Airport Tua Pejat to Solid Surf House pick up and drop off: FREE
More flights are still to be confirmed but expected to start flying in 2024/25 to the airport of Mentawai / Sipora Island, a 40 min drive from our Surf House.
